William Adams and the Shogunate Diplomacy
William Adams
English navigator, pilot, and trader. In 1600, he drifted ashore in Japan as part of a fleet sent by Dutch merchants, transmitting Western navigation and shipbuilding techniques to Tokugawa Ieyasu. He became a diplomatic advisor to Ieyasu and was involved in constructing Japan's first Western-style sailing ships. Later granted the name Miura Anjin, he was treated as a samurai. He also contributed to establishing trade relations with the Netherlands and England, remaining in Japan until his later years.
