Wang Dayuan and His Maritime Expeditions
Wang Dayuan
Chinese traveler and navigator during the Yuan Dynasty. Born in Nanchang, Jiangxi Province, he was based in Quanzhou, Fujian Province. He undertook two large-scale overseas voyages in the first half of the 14th century, visiting Southeast Asia, South Asia, the Arabian Sea coast, and East Africa. He recorded the geography, local products, trade, and customs of the inhabitants of various regions, authoring the "Daoyi Zhilue" around 1349. This work serves as an important historical source for studying Yuan-era maritime trade and exchanges between China and the Indian Ocean region.
