Coastal Defense and Military Innovations of Qi Jiguang
Qi Jiguang
A military commander and military theorist of the Ming dynasty. He distinguished himself in measures against the wokou (pirates) who raided the Chinese coast in the 16th century, organizing armies in Zhejiang and Fujian provinces to strengthen coastal defenses. Leading the highly trained elite unit known as the "Qi Family Army," he achieved major results in suppressing the wokou. Later, he served in northern defense, refurbishing and reinforcing the Great Wall of China to prepare for incursions by Mongol forces. He authored works such as *Jixiao Xinshu* and *Lianbing Shiji*, compiling military training techniques and tactics, which influenced military thought in subsequent generations.
