King Jungjong and Political Restructuring
Jungjong
The 11th king of the Joseon Dynasty, reigning from 1506 to 1544. Born as the second son of the 9th king, Seongjong, he came to the throne through the Jungjong Coup, which deposed his half-brother Yeonsangun. After ascending the throne, he sought to rebuild the administration from the Yeonsangun era and attempted reforms based on Neo-Confucian political ideals. In particular, he recruited the Neo-Confucian scholar Jo Gwang-jo to push forward reforms in the bureaucratic system, local autonomy, and Neo-Confucian education; however, these reforms collapsed due to opposition from conservative factions. His reign was marked by ongoing court factionalism and political interference by the Queen's relatives, alongside challenges in responding to Wokou pirates and the Jurchens.
