King Sejong's Reforms and Legal Codification
Sejo
The 7th king of the Joseon Dynasty. Born as the second son of Sejong, he was also known as Grand Prince Suyang. In 1453, he staged a coup that overthrew the government supporting his young nephew, Danjong, and ascended the throne in 1455 after forcing Danjong to abdicate. He strengthened royal power, reformed administrative systems, reorganized the land system, and launched military expeditions against the Jurchens. On the other hand, because he eliminated his younger brother and political rivals during his path to the throne and executed officials who attempted to restore Danjong, he is also viewed as a usurper of the throne. He is known for promoting the compilation of Gyeongguk Daejeon (Grand Code for State Administration), which served as the foundation of the governance system of the later Joseon Dynasty.
