King Seongjong and Institutional Consolidation

Seongjong

Seongjong was the 9th king of the Joseon Dynasty, reigning from 1469 to 1494. Ascending the throne at a young age, his grandmother Grand Royal Dowager Queen Jaseong and his birth mother Royal Dowager Queen Insu initially assisted in state affairs before he assumed direct rule in 1476. He completed and promulgated Gyeongguk Daejeon, promoted the recruitment of Neo-Confucian scholars, organized Hongmungwan (Office of Special Advisors), and fostered academic and publishing projects. Meanwhile, he strengthened restrictions regarding the remarriage of women and conducted a military expedition against the Jurchen forces in the north in 1491. He is known as a king who structured the governance system of the Joseon Dynasty in terms of culture and institutions.
