Jan Joosten and Dutch-Japanese Trade Relations
Jan Joosten
Dutch navigator and merchant. In 1600, he drifted ashore in Japan on the Dutch ship Liefde, serving Tokugawa Ieyasu and offering advice on diplomacy and trade. His Japanese name was Yayosu. He was also involved in the Red Seal ship trade, contributing to the development of commercial relations between Japan and the Netherlands. Granted a residence in Edo, he was one of the foreigners treated as a samurai, and the place name "Yaesu" around Tokyo Station is said to derive from his Japanese name.
