The Tragic Struggle of the Last Southern Ming Emperor
Zhu Youlang
A member of the Ming imperial family and the fourth and final emperor of the Southern Ming dynasty. Holding the title of Prince of Gui, he was elevated by forces seeking to restore the Ming dynasty after its collapse in 1644, ascending the throne as the Yongli Emperor in 1646. To resist the Qing forces, he aligned with generals such as Li Dingguo and Ming restorationist forces led by Zheng Chenggong; however, as the military situation deteriorated, he retreated to Yunnan and fled into exile to Burma (now Myanmar) in 1661. He was handed over by Wu Sangui, who led the Qing forces, and executed in Kunming, Yunnan Province. Even after the death of the Yongli Emperor, forces such as the Kingdom of Tungning in Taiwan continued resistance under the banner of Ming restoration.
