King Taejong and Centralization of Power
Taejong
The 3rd king of the Joseon Dynasty. Born as the fifth son of Taejo (Yi Seong-gye), he contributed to his father's overthrow of the Goryeo Dynasty and the founding of the Joseon Dynasty. After struggles for the throne with royal family members and key officials, he ascended the throne in 1400 and yielded it to his third son, Sejong, in 1418. While he strengthened royal authority, abolished private armies of nobles and influential figures, and established a centralized government system, he is also known for purging political rivals and royal family members.
