Selim I
Selim I
The 9th sultan of the Ottoman Empire. Reigning from 1512 to 1520, he is also known as "Yavuz Selim" (Selim the Grim/the Grim). Ascending the throne by usurping power from his father Bayezid II, he dramatically expanded the empire's territory through the Battle of Chaldiran against the Safavid Dynasty and wars with the Mamluk Sultanate. Between 1516 and 1517, he conquered Syria, Palestine, and Egypt, gaining influence over holy sites including Mecca and Medina. This transformed the Ottoman Empire into a major power in the Islamic world, laying the foundation for even greater prosperity during the reign of his successor, Suleiman I.
