Mehmed III
Mehmed III
The 13th sultan of the Ottoman Empire, reigning from 1595 to 1603. Son of Murad III and Safiye Sultan, he is known for ordering the execution of his many surviving younger brothers immediately after his accession to prevent succession disputes. His reign saw the continuation of the Long Turkish War against the Habsburgs, during which he personally led the army in 1596 to capture Eger and secured a victory at the Battle of Keresztes (Battle of Haçova). Meanwhile, his mother Safiye Sultan and grand viziers exerted strong influence in court politics. Following his death, his son Ahmed I succeeded him.
