Mustafa II
Mustafa II
The 22nd sultan of the Ottoman Empire, reigning from 1695 to 1703. Son of Mehmed IV and Gülnuş Sultan, he ascended the throne amidst the Great Turkish War and personally led armies against the Habsburg Monarchy in an effort to reclaim lost territories in Hungary. Despite securing some early military victories, he suffered a crushing defeat at the Battle of Zenta in 1697 and lost vast territories, including Hungary, under the 1699 Treaty of Karlowitz. Though he sought to restore the sultan's direct political authority, he was deposed in 1703 following a military revolt. He also maintained interests in poetry, hunting, and archery.
