Jean Chardin: French Jeweler and Preeminent Scholar of Persia
Jean Chardin
A French jeweler, traveler, and writer. Born into a Protestant Huguenot family, he traveled to Asia following in his father's footsteps as a jeweler. He resided in Safavid Persia for an extended period, making detailed observations of the court, society, religion, economy, culture, and architecture. His work *The Travels of Sir John Chardin* is highly valued as a crucial historical resource for understanding 17th-century Persia and West Asia. Amid growing pressure on Protestants in France, he emigrated to England, where he was knighted by Charles II. Elected a Fellow of the Royal Society, he dedicated his later years to publishing his travelogues and pursuing Oriental studies.
