Brief Reign and Purges of Ismail II
Ismail II
The third Shah of the Safavid dynasty, ruling from 1576 to 1577. Born as the second son of Tahmasp I, he was imprisoned in Qahqaheh Castle for about 20 years by his father's order amidst succession struggles. After his father's death, he ascended the throne with the political support of his sister Pari Khan Khanum and others, but during his brief reign, he destabilized the court by carrying out purges of royal family members and influential Qizilbash leaders. He also distanced himself from his father's pro-Shia policies and pursued a religious policy that was conciliatory toward Sunnis. He died suddenly in 1577, and while poisoning theories exist, the cause of death remains unconfirmed.
