Leading the Directory and Raising Napoleon to Power
Paul Barras
A French military officer and politician from a noble family in Provence. During the French Revolution, he became a member of the National Convention, a representative on mission, and a central figure among the Thermidorians, rising rapidly to power after the downfall of Robespierre. During the royalist 13 Vendémiaire uprising in 1795, he commanded government forces in Paris and appointed Napoleon Bonaparte as commander of the artillery. Subsequently, as one of the five Directors of the Directory from 1795 to 1799, he held actual power and became the leading figure representing the government. Politically, he shifted from the Republicans to the Thermidorians, maintaining power by suppressing both royalists and Jacobins according to the situation. Deprived of power by Napoleon in the Coup of 18 Brumaire in 1799, he subsequently fell from political grace.
