Charles Gounod's Elegant Lyric Operas

Charles Gounod

A composer, conductor, and organist representing French Romanticism. Known for his operas "Faust" and "Roméo et Juliette", sacred music, and "Ave Maria". He studied at the Paris Conservatoire and won the Prix de Rome in 1839, studying abroad in Italy. Heavily influenced by 16th-century sacred music by Palestrina and others, he became so devoted to sacred music upon returning home that he briefly considered entering the priesthood. Later moving into opera composition, the success of "Faust" established him as a leading French composer. He brought lyrical and elegant melodiousness to French opera, influencing later figures such as Jules Massenet and Gabriel Fauré.
