Franz Liszt's Virtuosic Keyboard Artistry
Franz Liszt
A Hungarian composer, pianist, conductor, and music teacher. Performing across Europe as a leading virtuoso pianist of the 19th century, he greatly developed the expressive technique of the piano. As a composer, he also left behind a vast number of works; in addition to piano pieces such as the Hungarian Rhapsodies, Transcendental Études, Années de pèlerinage, and the Piano Sonata in B minor, he developed a new orchestral genre called the "symphonic poem". In Weimar, he became a central figure of the New German School as a conductor, composer, and educator, supporting contemporary innovative musicians such as Berlioz and Wagner. In his later years, he led a "three-part life" traveling between Rome, Weimar, and Budapest, mentoring many students.
