An Austrian composer. Representing the transitional period from the Classical to the early Romantic era, he left behind a vast body of work including over 600 Lieder (songs), symphonies, chamber music, piano pieces, sacred music, and operas. He is particularly known for "Erlkönig", "Heidenröslein", "Die schöne Müllerin", "Winterreise", the Unfinished Symphony, Symphony No. 9 "The Great", and the String Quintet. During his short life of 31 years, he produced an extraordinarily large number of works, and his musical appreciation grew significantly after his death.
