Lord Palmerston: Architect of British Imperial Power
Henry John Temple
British politician and diplomat, 3rd Viscount Palmerston. He dominated British foreign policy over a long period from 1830 to 1865, serving as Foreign Secretary three times and as Prime Minister from 1855 to 1858 and 1859 to 1865. Shifting from the Tory Party to the Whigs, he became the first Prime Minister of the newly formed Liberal Party in 1859. Placing great emphasis on the European balance of power, he was actively involved in Belgian independence, affairs in Spain and Portugal, the Ottoman Empire question, and the movement for Italian unification. He pursued a forceful foreign policy in the Opium War, the Anglo-Egyptian War, and the Crimean War, expanding Britain's international influence. Conversely, his use of military force in China and imperialist diplomacy were heavily criticized. Domestically, he also engaged in social and criminal law reforms, becoming known as a representative diplomat-politician of mid-19th-century Britain.
