A French military officer and Marshal of the Empire who distinguished himself in the French Revolutionary Wars and Napoleonic Wars. Considered one of Napoleon's bravest and most capable generals, he held major commands in the Italian Campaign of 1796, the Egyptian Campaign, Austerlitz in 1805, Jena-Auerstedt in 1806, Friedland in 1807, and the Peninsular War in 1808. Becoming a Marshal of the Empire in 1804, he received titles such as Duke of Montebello and Duke of Siewierz. On close personal terms with Napoleon, he was one of the few confidants permitted to address the Emperor with the informal "tu." He was mortally wounded in both legs at the Battle of Aspern-Essling in 1809 and died a few days later.
