Wilhelm Pieck
Wilhelm Pieck
German communist politician. Beginning his political career in the Social Democratic Party (SPD), he joined the revolutionary left movement in opposition to World War I and became one of the co-founders of the Communist Party of Germany (KPD). Following the establishment of the Nazi regime, he fled into exile in France and the Soviet Union, continuing communist activities abroad. After World War II, he led the creation of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED) and assumed office as the first President of the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) upon its founding in 1949. He remained president until his death in 1960, though actual political power was concentrated within the SED leadership, leaving Pieck primarily to fulfill ceremonial head-of-state duties.
