Walter Ulbricht
Walter Ulbricht
German communist politician. He was active as one of the leaders of the Communist Party of Germany (KPD) and, after World War II, spearheaded the establishment of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED) and the construction of East Germany's socialist system. Serving as SED First Secretary from 1950 to 1971, he held immense influence over East Germany's political, economic, and social policies. From 1960 until his death, he also served as head of state in his capacity as Chairman of the Council of State. While maintaining close ties with the Soviet Union and reinforcing the socialist regime, he is also known for promoting one-party rule and political oppression. His leadership in building the Berlin Wall in 1961 became a defining symbol of East-West confrontation during the Cold War.
