Andrzej Wajda and Polish Historical Cinema
Andrzej Wajda
One of Poland's leading film and theatre directors. Drawing themes from World War II, the Nazi occupation, postwar Polish society, and the communist regime, he depicted history and individual destiny. Internationally known for his trilogy of war films comprising "A Generation", "Kanal", and "Ashes and Diamonds", he became a defining director of the Polish Film School. He received an Academy Honorary Award in 2000 and continuously questioned historical memory and state responsibility through works such as "Katyń".
