Heinrich Böll and Moral Reconstruction

Heinrich Böll

A German novelist, short story writer, and essayist. He reflected his experiences of being drafted into the German military during World War II, post-war social reconstruction, memories of the Nazi era, and critiques of the Catholic Church and West German society in his works. Depicting ordinary people's lives alongside the spiritual and material losses of war, he became a defining figure of post-war German literature. He won the Group 47 prize in 1951, the Georg Büchner Prize in 1967, and the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1972. He served as President of International PEN from 1971 to 1973.
