Rainer Werner Fassbinder and Social Critique
Rainer Werner Fassbinder
German film director, screenwriter, actor, and playwright. A representative figure of New German Cinema, he directed over 40 feature films during his brief active period from the late 1960s to 1982. Drawing themes from power relations in society, class discrimination, prejudice against foreign workers, homosexuality, and postwar German history, he was known for a style combining melodramatic forms with sharp social critique. His representative works include "The Merchant of Four Seasons", "Ali: Fear Eats the Soul", "The Marriage of Maria Braun", and "Berlin Alexanderplatz". He passed away in Munich in 1982 due to a drug overdose.
