Josef Smrkovský: Prague Spring Reformer

Josef Smrkovský: Prague Spring Reformer

Josef Smrkovský

Czechoslovak communist politician. During World War II, he participated in the underground resistance movement against the occupation by Nazi Germany. After the war, he held key positions in the communist regime and supported the communist seizure of power in 1948, but was arrested in a political purge in 1951 and sentenced to life imprisonment. He was released in 1955 and rehabilitated in 1963. During the 1968 "Prague Spring", he became a central figure of the reformists and served as Chairman of the National Assembly. Following the Warsaw Pact invasion, he lost his political influence due to the downfall of the reformists and the progress of "normalization" policies.
