Egon Krenz: transition leader during East Germany's fall

Egon Rudi Ernst Krenz

Former East German (German Democratic Republic) communist politician. He advanced within the party as an executive of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED) and served as a leader of the Free German Youth (FDJ), among other roles. In October 1989, he assumed the position of SED General Secretary as the successor to Erich Honecker, and served as Chairman of the Council of State from October to December of that year. Although he became leader during a period when the fall of the Berlin Wall and the transition of East Germany's regime were progressing, while nominally in a position to lead reforms, he was also involved in maintaining the old regime. Held accountable for the deaths of individuals attempting to cross the Berlin Wall, he was sentenced in 1997 to six and a half years in prison for manslaughter (corresponding to intentional killing rather than negligence), and was released in 2003 after serving his sentence. He continues to speak out and write from his own perspective regarding the former East German regime to this day.
