Günter Grass and National Conscience
Günter Grass
A German novelist, poet, playwright, sculptor, and printmaker. One of the representative authors of post-World War II German literature, he continuously probed memories of the Nazi era, war responsibility, and how German society confronts its past through his works. His masterwork, *The Tin Drum*, gained international acclaim as a novel depicting history and society through satirical and fantastical lenses. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1999. Following the war, he supported the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) and spoke out actively on political and social issues. Meanwhile, his 2006 public disclosure of his membership in the Waffen-SS near the end of World War II sparked criticism and debate over his long-standing failure to reveal that background.
