William Tyndale: Pioneer of the English Bible
William Tyndale
An English scholar, clergyman, linguist, and reformer. He translated the Bible into English directly from the original Greek and Hebrew texts, exerting a major influence on the Reformation in the English-speaking world. His English New Testament, published in 1526, was a particularly significant early English Bible translation that circulated widely using printing technology. He also addressed Henry VIII's church policies in his writings, and his religious and political works brought him into conflict with the Catholic Church and the Crown. He was arrested in Antwerp in 1535, found guilty of heresy, strangled, and then burned at the stake in Vilvoorde in 1536.
