John Napier and the Invention of Logarithms

John Napier

Scottish mathematician, physicist, astronomer, and landowner. Also known as the 8th Laird of Merchiston. Particularly famous as the inventor of logarithms, he published "Description of the Marvelous Canon of Logarithms (Mirifici Logarithmorum Canonis Descriptio)" in 1614, demonstrating a method to greatly simplify complex multiplication, division, and trigonometric calculations. He also devised the calculating device "Napier's bones," popularized the use of the decimal point, and contributed to spherical trigonometry. He was a versatile scholar interested not only in mathematics, but also in theology, astronomy, agriculture, and military technology.
