The Golden Age of Elizabeth I
Elizabeth Tudor
Queen Elizabeth I of England and Ireland. Ruling for 44 years from 1558 to 1603, she was the final monarch of the Tudor dynasty. Born to Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, she temporarily lost her right of succession following her mother's execution and the annulment of her parents' marriage, but was later restored to the succession order. After her accession, she established the structure of the Church of England through religious settlements in 1559 and managed the war with Spain, the defeat of the Spanish Armada, and rebellions in Ireland. She is known as the defining monarch of the Elizabethan era, a period that saw the flourishing of drama and literature by figures like Shakespeare as well as overseas voyages. Having never married nor produced an heir, she was succeeded upon her death by King James VI of Scotland, who ascended as King James I of England.
