Giordano Bruno and the Infinite Universe
Filippo Bruno
Italian Renaissance philosopher, poet, mathematician, cosmologist, theologian, and researcher of the art of memory. Expanding on Copernicus's heliocentrism, he argued that the universe is not finite but infinite, that fixed stars are distant suns, and that planets like Earth might exist around them. He also developed a unique natural philosophy asserting that life and spirituality exist throughout the universe. Although he became a Dominican friar and priest, he left the order over religious disagreements and subsequently traveled throughout Europe. Arrested in Venice in 1592 and tried for a prolonged period by the Roman Inquisition, he was executed at the stake as a heretic in 1600.
