John Fisher: Catholic Martyr and Scholar

John Fisher

An English Catholic clergyman, theologian, Bishop of Rochester, and Chancellor of the University of Cambridge. Trusted by Henry VII and Margaret Beaufort, he dedicated himself to advancing education and research at the University of Cambridge. During the Reformation, he criticized Lutheranism and opposed Henry VIII's annulment of his marriage to Catherine of Aragon, as well as his policy making the King the Supreme Head of the Church of England. In 1534, he refused to take the oath recognizing the Royal Supremacy and was imprisoned in the Tower of London. Convicted of treason in 1535, he was beheaded at Tower Hill. Created a cardinal shortly before his death, he was canonized by the Catholic Church in 1935.
