The Catholic Restoration of Mary I
Mary Tudor
Queen Mary I of England. Reigning from 1553 to 1558, she was the first female monarch in English history to formally inherit the throne, setting aside the briefly contested reigns of Empress Matilda and Lady Jane Grey. Born to Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon, she lost her right of succession after her father declared her parents' marriage invalid, but was restored to the line of succession by the Third Succession Act of 1544. Ousting Lady Jane Grey to claim the throne during the succession crisis of 1553, she spearheaded the Catholic Restoration. She married King Philip II of Spain and joined the war against France in 1557. Dying without issue, she was succeeded by her half-sister, Elizabeth I.
