Hugh Latimer: Protestant Preacher and Martyr

Hugh Latimer

An English clergyman, preacher, theologian, and reformer. Educated at Cambridge, he initially defended Catholic doctrine but embraced Reformation theology through the influence of Thomas Bilney and others. He became a royal chaplain during the reign of Henry VIII and was appointed Bishop of Worcester in 1535. Opposing the Six Articles of 1539, he resigned his bishopric and was imprisoned. Under Edward VI, he acted as a prominent Protestant preacher, but was arrested after Mary I's accession and was burned at the stake alongside Nicholas Ridley in Oxford on October 16, 1555. He is remembered as one of the Oxford Martyrs alongside Thomas Cranmer.
