John Jewel: Defender of the Elizabethan Settlement

John Jewel

An English clergyman, theologian, reformer, and writer. He served as Bishop of Salisbury from 1559 to 1571 and was a leading theologian defending the Church of England during the Elizabethan era. In his major work, Apology of the Church of England (Apologia Ecclesiae Anglicanae), he systematically explained the doctrinal position of the Church of England against the Roman Catholic Church. During the reign of Mary I, he fled into continental exile to escape the persecution of Protestants, staying in Frankfurt, Strasbourg, Zurich, and Padua. He returned after Elizabeth I's accession and played a major role in shaping the doctrine of the post-Reformation English Church and in polemics against Roman Catholicism.
