Peter Paul Rubens and Baroque Diplomacy
Peter Paul Rubens
A leading painter of the Flemish Baroque and a diplomat. He produced a wide range of works including religious, mythological, historical, portrait, and landscape paintings, characterized by dynamic compositions, rich colors, and voluptuous figures. He maintained a large workshop in Antwerp and received commissions from royalty and nobility across Europe. A humanist well-versed in classical literature and art, he also served as a diplomat for the Spanish Netherlands, traveling between Spain, England, France, and the Dutch Republic. Knighted by King Philip IV of Spain and King Charles I of England, he was internationally active as both a painter and a diplomat.
