Charles V of Lorraine: Imperial Field Marshal
Charles V
Duke of Lorraine and Duke of Bar. Born into the ducal family of Lorraine living in exile in Vienna due to the French occupation of Lorraine, he served as an Imperial military commander for the House of Habsburg. Entering military service in 1663, he became an Imperial Field Marshal in 1675. Although he succeeded to the titular Duchy of Lorraine in 1675, Lorraine remained under French occupation. During the Siege of Vienna in 1683, he commanded the Imperial army and defeated the Ottoman forces alongside King John III Sobieski of Poland. He continued fighting the Ottoman Empire in Hungary, contributing significantly to the expansion of the House of Habsburg into Southeastern Europe. In 1689, he fought French forces along the Rhine and recaptured Mainz, but died of illness the following year in 1690.
