Maria Sibylla Merian's Insect Studies
Maria Sibylla Merian
A German-born naturalist, entomologist, botanical and insect painter, and scientific illustrator. Observing plants and insects from her childhood, she meticulously documented the process of metamorphosis: eggs, larvae, pupae, and adult insects. Contrary to the common 17th-century European belief in the spontaneous generation of insects, she is known as a pioneer who demonstrated the insect life cycle based on actual observation. In 1699, she traveled to Suriname in South America with her daughter Dorothea Maria to study tropical insects and plants. Her 1705 publication "Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium" became a masterpiece combining scientific observation with precise artistic illustrations.
