Georg Ernst Stahl's Phlogiston Theory
Georg Ernst Stahl
A physician, chemist, natural philosopher, alchemist, university professor, and court physician from Ansbach in the Holy Roman Empire. He studied medicine at the University of Jena and served as a professor on the medical faculty at the University of Halle, teaching medicine, chemistry, botany, pharmacy, and other subjects. He is particularly famous for systemizing the "phlogiston theory" to explain combustion and the alteration of metals, which exerted a major influence on 18th-century chemical thought. He also adopted a stance explaining biological phenomena through the "anima" (soul or vital force), demonstrating a pioneering approach in medicine that emphasized the mind-body connection. From 1715 onward, he served as the personal physician to King Frederick William I of Prussia and was involved in medical administration in Berlin.
