Leopold I and the Defense of Central Europe
Leopold I
Born as the second son of Ferdinand III and Maria Anna of Spain, he became heir to the Habsburg line following the death of his older brother, Ferdinand IV, in 1654. Elected Holy Roman Emperor in 1658, he reigned for nearly 47 years until 1705. During the Great Turkish War against the Ottoman Empire, he oversaw the relief of Vienna and the reconquest of Hungary, while also opposing Louis XIV of France across the Franco-Dutch War, the Nine Years' War, and the War of the Spanish Succession. Possessing a strong Catholic faith, he supported the Counter-Reformation, was active as a musician and composer, and patronized the musical culture of the Imperial Court in Vienna.
