Ferdinand Ernst and the Peace of Westphalia
Ferdinand Ernst
Holy Roman Emperor from the House of Habsburg. Born in Graz as the eldest son of Ferdinand II and Princess Maria Anna of Bavaria. He became King of Hungary in 1625, King of Bohemia in 1627, King of the Romans in 1636, and succeeded to the throne as Holy Roman Emperor upon his father's death in 1637. During the Thirty Years' War, he commanded the imperial army and defeated the Swedish forces at the Battle of Nördlingen in 1634. After ascending the imperial throne, he placed greater emphasis on peace than his father Ferdinand II had, pursuing reconciliation within the empire through the Peace of Prague in 1635 and ultimately bringing the Thirty Years' War to an end with the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. After the war, he restructured the imperial administrative system, while also displaying talent in music and actively composing. He was the first Habsburg monarch recognized as an accomplished composer in his own right.
