Dieterich Buxtehude: Organ Legend
Dieterich Buxtehude
A Danish-German organist and composer who flourished from the late 17th century to the early 18th century. One of the representative musicians of the North German Organ School, he served as organist at St. Mary's Church (St. Marien) in Lübeck from 1668 until his death. In addition to gaining great renown in the North German musical world for his outstanding organ performances and sacred music, he developed the "Abendmusik" concerts at St. Mary's Church, establishing a tradition of large-scale concerts independent of church services. He also had a profound influence on Johann Sebastian Bach, who visited Lübeck in 1705 to study Buxtehude's playing and musical activities.
