Matthias and the Escalation of Imperial Crisis
Matthias
Holy Roman Emperor from the House of Habsburg. Born as the third son of Emperor Maximilian II and Maria of Spain, he served as Archduke of Austria from 1608, King of Hungary and Croatia from 1608 to 1618, King of Bohemia from 1611 to 1617, and Holy Roman Emperor from 1612 to 1619. In his opposition to his elder brother, Rudolf II, he unified rival factions within the Habsburg family, forcing Rudolf to yield control over Hungary, Austria, and Moravia in 1608, and acquiring the crown of Bohemia in 1611. In 1606, he was instrumental in concluding the Peace of Vienna with Hungarian rebels and the Treaty of Zsitvatorok with the Ottoman Empire. After ascending the imperial throne, he came under the strong influence of Cardinal Melchior Klesl. In his later years, religious and political conflicts escalated in Bohemia, leading to the Bohemian Revolt of 1618 and the outbreak of the Thirty Years' War.
