Jan Baptist van Helmont
A Flemish physician, chemist, plant physiologist, and natural philosopher from the Southern Netherlands. A researcher in iatrochemistry influenced by Paracelsus, he studied matter and physiological phenomena with an emphasis on experimentation. He is notably recognized as the person who studied gases as distinct substances and introduced the word "gas" into scientific terminology. Additionally, he conducted a five-year growth experiment using a willow tree, studied carbon dioxide, and researched digestion, respiration, and nutrition, making him one of the representative scientists of the transition period from alchemy to modern chemistry.
