Matthias Grünewald and the Isenheim Altarpiece
Matthias Grünewald
A prominent painter, printmaker, architect, and hydraulic engineer of the German Renaissance. Focusing primarily on religious paintings, he developed a unique artistic style characterized by intense colors, dramatic lighting, and powerful expressions of suffering and mysticism. His masterpiece is the Isenheim Altarpiece (created around 1512–1516), produced for the hospital of the Monastery of St. Anthony in Isenheim, Alsace. While serving as court painter to the Archbishop of Mainz, he was also involved in architecture and hydraulic engineering projects.
