Lucas Cranach the Younger: Workshop Successor
Lucas Sunder
A painter and portraitist active from the German Renaissance to the Mannerist period. Born in Wittenberg as the second son of Lucas Cranach the Elder, he trained in his father's workshop. Following the sudden death of his elder brother Hans in 1537, his involvement in managing the workshop increased, and he effectively took over the workshop after his father left Wittenberg in 1550. He produced numerous religious paintings and portraits, and is also known for portraits of Reformation-related figures such as Martin Luther and the Electors of Saxony. Furthermore, he held public offices in Wittenberg including city councilor, treasurer, and mayor.
