Hans Holbein the Younger: Court Portraitist
Hans Holbein
A German-born painter and printmaker who worked primarily in Switzerland and England. As one of the prominent portraitists of the Northern Renaissance, he created portraits of Erasmus, Thomas More, Henry VIII, Anne Boleyn, Thomas Cromwell, and others. In Basel, he produced religious paintings, prints, and book illustrations; when the Reformation altered the demand for religious art, he moved his field of activity to England. Around 1535, he became the court painter to Henry VIII, designing royal and courtier portraits as well as ornaments and festival decorations.
