Theobald von Bethmann-Hollweg
Theobald von Bethmann-Hollweg
A politician and bureaucrat of the German Empire, serving as the 5th Chancellor of the German Empire and Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Prussia. After serving as the Prussian Minister of the Interior, among other posts, he succeeded Bernhard von Bülow as Chancellor in 1909. In domestic politics, he aimed for moderate reforms that sought harmony among conservatives, liberals, and the Centre Party, but remained cautious regarding the democratization of systems such as Prussia's three-class franchise. During World War I, he was at the center of Germany's decision to enter the war and its overall direction; during the July Crisis of 1914, he pledged support to Austria-Hungary, contributing to the escalation of the conflict. Meanwhile, during the war, he sought a peace without major annexations and initially opposed unrestricted submarine warfare, deepening his conflict with the military's hardline faction. In 1917, under pressure both from the Reichstag Peace Resolution and from the military, he resigned as Chancellor. After stepping down, he wrote his memoirs and passed away in his hometown of Hohenfinow in 1921.
