The Liberal Crown Prince and 99-Day Emperor
Friedrich III
The 2nd Emperor of the German Empire and King Friedrich III of Prussia. Born as the eldest son of Wilhelm I, he ascended the throne on March 9, 1888, but because he suffered from laryngeal cancer, his reign lasted only 99 days. From his time as Crown Prince, he held liberal and constitutional political ideas, supporting British-style parliamentary politics and the liberalization of Germany alongside his wife, Victoria. While frequently in conflict with Bismarck's hardline political stance, as a military officer he commanded troops in the Second Schleswig War, the Austro-Prussian War, and the Franco-Prussian War, earning high praise for his military achievements. He passed away at the age of 56 on June 15, 1888, and was succeeded by his son, Wilhelm II.
